Brown Cloud is a bombastic trio comprised of Seattle drummer Chris Icasiano, guitarist/electrician Kristian Garrard, and EWI/saxophonist/keyboardist Andrew Swanson. Their music finds its origins in traditional improvised music, but necessarily it has emerged in a post-jazz era. Because of this, the band has forsaken the formal structures and sonorities that are typically associated with the jazz idiom in exchange for wide-open improvisational fields and electronically manipulated sounds. Utilizing an array of computer-generated effects and self-programmed digital processing, Garrard twists his guitar to shriek like growing banshee army or to chant like a bell tower symphony. Icasiano will frequently allow his quiet, orderly drum rolls spin to out into brick-smashing tornadoes of percussion. With the use of his various instruments, Swanson also produces a vast range of sonorities in tandem with Garrard and Icasiano, resonating together like a choir of singing mountains.
Brown Cloud contains members of Thousands, speak, Heatwarmer, Bad Luck and many other noteworthy Seattle music outfits. Local drum celebrity Evan Woodle will be joining them for their IMP Festival performance, which also will be the world premiere of a brand new composition for two drumsets, keyboard, EWI and guitar.
